Since I’ve ignored this blog for so many years (yeah, years), I recently skipped several major versions when upgrading various parts of the site to make sure they could stand up better to modern threats and whatnot. One of the side effects of this is that the site was on a version of WordPress so old that it was running with some really ancient MySQL settings; the transition from old to new has resulted in some weirdness in old posts that I’m going back and fixing. In a way, it’s made me kind of happy that I wasn’t so prolific a poster on this thing, as I’ve chosen to manually edit out the weirdness, as an automated solution would involve several things that would probably break due to hosting settings.
So, if you see weird boxes in posts, chalk it up to an unforeseen character set change (hey — I don’t have the time to check for craziness with the same rigor as I do at work) and know that I’ll get to it eventually.
