Upgrades, Downgrades and the Status Quo

1-8.

First the Caps, now the Nats. On top of that, the Wizards are on a six-game losing streak themselves. With the usual Redskins mediocraty, that makes for a pretty crappy sports year in Washington, with only the DC United to save us from total ignominity (though even the mighty United couldn’t close the deal when they needed to last year, either). So much for the Most Powerful City in the World, huh? 😛 We got attorney general scandal, wartime scandal and scandalous baseball and hockey.

Overall, of course, the Wizards’ recent success hasn’t been seen here in a long time and is much appreciated. Everyone knew the Nats probably would struggle for every win they get this year, so there’s not so much pain there as there is malaise. Eventually the Caps will put some talent around Ovechkin and will go places, much like the Pens are doing this year.

So much for the downgrades. I will soon be doing a low-budget upgrade to my desktop machine in order to squeeze every last erg out of the old horse before I’m likely to build another one in a year or so. (Heh. Still not used to calling a two-year-old machine “old.” Heck, back in ye olde early- to mid-90’s, I kept my 486 for eight years, running Windows 3.1, copiously upgrading it along the way.) New processor and video card. Stretching every last bit of that Socket 939 board that’s nearing the end of its cycle. I’ll let ya know how that works out.

Continuing on with my re-reading of the Ender’s Game series, I’ve made my way to my least-favorite of the original run, Xenocide. Long and, at times, boring, there are parts of this book that I do enjoy. I’m planning to pick up some more classic Card from some of his other sci-fi series. Probably gonna start with Wyrms; Marvel’s comic series based on that one has piqued my interest, so I want to check out the story in its original medium.

Ciao.
