So that’s what it’s all about…

A couple of my friends had brought up joining Facebook a few times to me. I’ve done a couple of social networking sites way back when, but stuff like that’s not for me — as you can see, I have trouble just keeping one measly blog up-to-date. 😛 Had no previous interest in checking this one out, despite the good things I’d heard about it. A little more private, a little more focused than your run-of-the-mill site. Yeah, whatever.

Well, a couple of my friends leaned on me a bit and I decided to sign up last night. Gotta admit, this introverted skeptic’s a bit impressed. It really is pretty focused, and yet it can get pretty expansive pretty quickly. The data analysis that happens in the background’s pretty tight; you expect that once you put in your city, the schools you’ve been to and a couple friends that you’d end up with all these possible “friends” that you’ve never heard of. However, they mine your data so tightly that out of the bunches of people they suggested for friends when I had, say, five or so friends specified, I recognized almost all of them — very few strangers in the bunch. Saw people on there that I hadn’t seen in years. It’s kinda cool; I wish this was around when I was in college, ‘cuz maybe it wouldn’t have been so long since I’d talked to some of these folks.

I must admit, it’s pretty darn interesting. I’m not much into the applications yet; never have been much of a gadget guy. We’ll see how it goes, though.
